Did you see our last article about this new festival happening in Seoul?

Coming To Korea: The “Seoul Whistler Film Festival (SWFF)” [& We’ll Be There…!]

Well… It’s hard to believe that it’s already late September and that this also means NEXT MONTH is when SWFF will hit the vibrant, hip area of Hongdae!

We have a bit of an update or two for you.  Of course, I’m still reeling from being invited to be a jury member on the SWFF’s panel and indeed being amongst their first line-up of such people – since then, others have been added and you can read a little more about this below (as well as in the previous MMM post about SWFF).

Although more info will be coming your way even nearer to the time, our very own Jason Verney [who is also attending and in a certain capacity a supporter of the SWFF] has had some inside information and can confirm a few juicy details.

Tickets for the event will be available at the relevant festival locations, as well as ultimately via the SWFF website.

So… What else do we now know?

Well…

As this article is being written, there has already been around 100 films submitted AND from many varied countries.  Here are a few bits of news before we get into the main section of this article.

  • There will be screened about 23 films, including 6 features and 17 shorts; documentary and fiction… of approximately those 100 films submitted to the film festival.

  • The venue has been named!  Happening for three days from October 25 to 27 at Sangsang Madang in Hongdae, Seoul

  • A few more supporters, jury members, sponsors and members in other capacities have since been added to SWFF, which really backs up the reputation in the festival’s intentions and/or organisers.  I’m really happy about this news, not least because I know a few of these individuals.

MiniMiniMovie.com – and Jason Verney – is an Official Supporter of this festival.

Further and more recent NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS include some of the below POINTS:

Seoul Whistler Film Festival (SWFF)

A film festival that brings out the words that are in our hearts

■  The Seoul Whistler Film Festival (SWFF) is an international film festival that screens films that contain stories that we want to tell the world, either socially or personally.

– ‘Whistler’ is an English word meaning ‘a person who whistles’, and also means ‘whistleblower’ or ‘inner whistleblower’. The Seoul Whistler Film Festival is an independent film festival for whistleblowers in our society or those who reveal the insides of our hearts without hiding anything.

■ The Seoul Whistler Film Festival, which will be held for the first time this year, will be held for three days from October 25 to 27 (Friday to Sunday) at Sangsang Madang in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, Seoul.

■ The Seoul Whistler Film Festival is co-hosted with the independent media outlet, Citizen Media Mindlenews.

– The festival’s executive committee chairperson is writer Yoon Jungmo (former chairman of the Korean Writers’ Association) and the standing advisors are Kang Ki-seok, who is advisor at Citizen Media Mindlenews (and also former editor-in-chief of Kyunghyang Shinmun, the chairman of the News Agency Promotion Association), and Seoul National University professor emeritus Kim Se-gyun, as well as former vice minister of culture, sports and tourism Kim Seong-jae as the organizing committee chairperson.

■ The Seoul Whistler Film Festival is comprised of approximately 50 experts from various fields from various countries around the world, including Korea, Australia, the UK, and the US, and is registered with the world film festival portal Film Freeway and the movie information website IMDB.

– The festival aims to screen around 20 feature-length and short-length films this year, its first year, and so far, around 100 low-budget feature-length and short-length films from around 20 countries around the world have been submitted, including films invited to the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival this year, as well as works by former Academy Award winners.

– In a film market centered on blockbusters, it is difficult to see low-budget masterpieces on various screens, but the Seoul Whistler Film Festival will be a time to quench that thirst in Hongdae this fall.

■ The Seoul Whistler Film Festival is expected to attract an estimated 3,000 audience members over the three days, and consists of various programs such as film screenings, red carpets, forums, and after-parties.

■ The Seoul Whistler Film Festival (SWFF) is sponsored by publisher Pungwoldang, Kyoyu Bookstore, civic cultural group Mokseonjae, Sihwa Labor Policy Research Institute, Korea Smart Cooperative, 4.9 Unification Peace Foundation, and Humanities Research Institute Moonsimwon.

The SWFF is currently discussing collaborations with other organizations and companies.
