If you’ve read a few of MMM’s more recent articles, you may have noticed author Jason Verney [me;)] write about the Seoul Whistler Film Festival (SWFF) which was about to take place in the heart of Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea and being a judge at that festival… and at least one posting following the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF)…
Well, following both of these events, and to tie in with a special interview with someone who has lived in Korea for more than two decades – that’s JOE MCPHERSON – it was decided that I should simultaneously release TWO episodes of the “Not So Korean Podcast“, or at least be uploaded as near as one another as I could.
As different as these 2 episodes or subjects may seem – an interview with a ‘foodie’ and Seoul tour guide AND a ‘review’ of those film festivals – the 2 things come together rather well.
You see, despite my interview with Mr McPherson occurring in Thailand and therefore a short while before I hopped over to Korea for my 11th trip! (in about 13 years…!), the two of us would actually be acting as JUDGES at that Seoul Whistler Film Festival.

Episode 47 explains all this in it and serves as an accompanying show to that of Episode 48.
Episode 47 touches on not only SWFF, BIFF and Joe McPherson (and indeed James Turnbull, a former guest on my ‘NoSoKoPo’ [Not So Korean Podcast] but also my long stay in the city of Busan, my involvement with the 2nd anniversary of the Itaewon Halloween tragedy and a lot more.
I’ll simply now leave the YT version of these episodes below (but of course, being a podcast the audio is available also on Spotify, Apple Music and all good audio platforms), along with a little description for each.
In episode 48, Jay speaks with Joe McPherson, the person behind Zen Kimchi Experiences, a rapidly growing tour operator in South Korea and whom is known to be somewhat of a food expert, but also podcaster and generally a man of many talents.
In this hour-long chat with Joe McPherson we learn about food tours, ‘dark tours’, his time running restaurants, podcasting, time in televsion, encounters with Anthony Bourdain and Bernie Sanders, Thai food and of course Korean food, South and North!
This interview has been in the works for some time and covers so much ground, and so we hope you enjoy it!
In this episode, Jay discusses his most recent trip to South Korea, upcoming guests on the ‘NoSoKoPo’, the experience of being a judge at the new Hongdae-based, “SWFF (Seoul Whistler Film Festival)” and more.
Amongst other topics, this jam-packed show touches on Jay’s experience staying long-term in a different part of Busan, attending the 29th edition of BIFF (Busan International Film Festival), the 2nd anniversary of the Itaewon tragedy, Halloween in Hongdae and the almost simoultaneous released Episode 48, in which Joe McPherson is our special guest / interview.
